Don’t be fooled like I was – that dark-colored bottle is clear, showing the rich, raspberry color of the wine itself. 100% Grolleau, an almost extinct deep red grape from the Loire, this red wine is classically vinified as a rosé; winemaker Pascal Pibaleau has crafted a lovely sparkling red in the frizzante (slightly fizzy) style.
Pibaleau farms organically and biodynamically, and his winemaking choices yield a curious, interesting wine. The nose hints at sweetness, with notes of violets and red berries like raspberry and cranberry, but a touch of mustiness better prepares the palate. When you taste, a medium acidity shines without overwhelming before a surprising nuttiness comes through. Those red fruits are apparent on the finish, rounding it out.
These savory characteristics mean that this wine can hold up to earthy, hearty food. Try it with a lamb chops or lentil stew for interesting contrasts.
