My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary together a few months ago with a four course tasting menu at mas (la grillade) in New York. Here, everything is prepared on huge grills, with different woods paired with the different kinds of meat, fish, and other goodies featured on the menu. I wanted a wine that would be versatile withe the variety of dishes ordered—ranging from artichokes and scallops to pork and quail—and decided a Riesling would be a great fit (it’s also a wine we can agree on… he’s not a big lover of reds). The sommelier suggested a 2001 JJ Christoffel Erdener Treppchen Spätlese, versatile, crisp, and at $80 also a great deal for an aged Mosel wine (don’t forget, it was a celebration night). It was a perfect wine to carry us through the meal and into another year together.
